7.5 miles of prayer

Posted: August 12, 2011 in Uncategorized

The other day we took the kids on a prayer walk all through out our beautiful city.  Starting at the top of signal hill we took in the view and listened to our city.  We then spent the next five hours wandering through our city with a few goals in mind.

Try 5 new foods

Meet 5 new people

Ask 5 new questions

Go into 5 new stores

And of course, Pray

I wish I could capture in words all that took place but hopefully these photos will do a better job.

Last year I had the most incredible privelege to live in Japan for 6 months while I was on a performance contract for Tokyo Disney. It was awesome! Japan and its people are remarkable. I quickly fell in love with their country, their society, their culture. I made some incredible friendships with many of the Japanese people I was working with. Needless to say, when I got word of the tragedy that has recently taken place in Japan, I was heartbroken. I was so distressed and my heart literally ached for this country and these people. A tsunami, earthquake, AND the impending threat of widespread radiation?? I have been praying without ceasing and I feel really called to help Japan in a personal, tangible way. Although donating money to any of the organizations collecting relief funds (World Vision, Samaritan’s Purse, Red Cross, Save the Children) is so critically important, especially for the hundreds of thousands of displaced families to receive immediate aid, less than 1% of Japan’s HUGE population has even heard of Jesus! Last year on Easter I wished my stage manager “Happy Easter!” and she thought I was trying to tell her I was supposed to be in an Easter parade! I tried to explain to her that it was a celebration of Jesus, and even looked up how to translate into Japanese “Jesus? Jesus Christ?” “Wakani.” (I don’t know) she said, and dismissed it.

Thinking of this instigated my idea for The Garden’s Children Ministry. I translated Psalm 27:14 “Be strong, take heart, and wait on the Lord” into Japanese using Google translate and printed out mini posters for the kids to draw pictures of encouragement on. I talked about how we are one body of Christ, even on the other side of the world! God loves the Japanese, and the kids were so sweet in immediately asking if we could all get a boat and go over there to build houses for the homeless families! We talked about the importance of prayer and keeping faith even when it seems like things are so terrible for a long time.

I have heard back from many of my friends in Japan, as well as a missionary family in Northern Japan and from Jesus Lifehouse Tokyo which would all be willing to receive and share these pictures. I will also be emailing these posters and pictures to my Japanese friends and, using modern technology, they can pass it on to families or friends who may have been seriously affected by the disaster.  Here is one response:

Hi Rachel!
Thank you so much for your kind message! It made us cry!! You are your little class are sooo sweet!!!
We are all safe and Tokyo is not in bad situation, but we still feel some little aftershocks. Around Tokyo Disney is still bad and the park can’t open for a while.
It was the most biggest earthquake and worst terrible disaster I have ever experienced, but our friends around the world encourage us and support us. The love from them make us genki! We are so happy to have such wonderful friends like you.
We want to see the pictures that your class colored!
Thanks again for thinking of us! Please say “konnichiwa” to your class for us :)
Lots of love,
Taisei, Yu and Grandma xoxo

God prepares the soil, and we plant the seed. It may be a small contribution of encouragement in comparison to the greatness of this tragedy, but I believe God could really touch the hearts of the Japanese and start a revolution of faith in their people. Even a small spark can ignite a fire.

Alright.  It’s been too long. There has been so much happening within the children’s ministry at the Garden and after not writing one thing they just started accumulating and here we are, months later, with A LOT to show for the past few months, but I’ll try my best to go back later and fill you in on the details.

Tonight was 3rd Wednesday.  Every 3rd Wednesday our church gathers at Long Beach Christian Fellowship for a prayer and worship night.  Last month was the first month the kids attended and, to say the least, they got ROCKED by the Holy Spirit…they cried their first tears of joy.  Absolutely amazing. (I’ve been trying to get the boys to write up their experience…still working on it.  Keep you posted. haha)  So after that they were so excited and expectant for tonight.

To bring you up to speed, I have had the privilige of discipling a few of the girls for one hour every week.  We usually just hangout, talk, share a meal, pray, read some scriptures.  Last week I really wanted to demonstrate the power and intimacy of listening prayer so we spent about 45 minutes in silence.  We drove up to Signal Hill to look over all of Long Beach and talk to God and journal.  In the midst of this Kirrah came to the realization that God not only knows and cares about her, but He knows and cares about every single person in Long Beach and the rest of the world.  She came up to me and asked if we could feed the homeless next week.  DONE.  I called my friend, Katie, who has a ministry called Bag of Hope and we planned to take plastic bags with water bottles, crackers, toothbrush, etc. inside to people we saw on the streets.  That ended up being today, 3rd Wednesday.

We prayed and went out and the first person we saw was a man named Vince sitting on the corner at the freeway off ramp on Bellflower in Long Beach.  We parked, grabbed a bag and walked up to the man.  We sat down with him on the sidewalk and talked to him for about 20 minutes.  It came out that we “went to church”, the girls and I got to pray for him and as we left I casually said, “Well, if you’re not doing anything in 30 minutes you’re welcome to join us at a worship night.” He agreed.  Tonight he was completely overwhelmed by God.  He told me about his past in ministry and how he was burnt out and turned away but basically knows that God is after him and he has been avoiding it. According to him he will be calling me (or Greg) on Sunday for a ride to church.  We shall see!  God only knows how the girls touched that man’s heart.  Be praying.

Another story from tonight, a woman was walking around in the lobby area of the church before the night officially started.

“What time does this thing start?”

I told her “7″, she thanked me and I went inside.  A few minutes later she had wandered inside and I noticed her walking around alone, looking confused.

“Have you been here or to the Garden before?” I asked her.

She said no, but she was meeting a friend.  We talked a little more and the service started.  After singing a few songs we broke out into small groups to pray for the world, Japan, our city and one another.  The kids spread out into different groups and Kirrah and Taty ended up in her group.  After the worship ended she came up to me and asked if I was in charge of a ministry.  I told her about the kids.

She said, “What do I have to do to get involved in the children’s ministry?”

I started to answer, then..”Wait. Did you say you have been to the Garden before?”

“No,” she said.  ”But I don’t even need to go to the main service.  I just want to come and hang out with the kids.  Kirrah and Taty came into my group and prayed better prayers than I did and I can just tell by observing all the kids tonight that they are different.”  She wants to come to the Garden because of them.

What!??  So amazing.  Who says kids can’t bring people to Christ?

I’ll be better about this.

As some of you know I’m in the process of planning a long term mission over to Africa.  This mission is being built around inner healing prayer.  Inner healing prayer is basically inviting Jesus into memories and fears that are affecting the way that you act or feel in the present time and letting Him heal the pain and shed light on the lies that you’ve been believing about yourself or other people.  This results in freedom to live in your true identity as one of Christ’s children.

I’ve prayed with my peers and even people 2 decades older than myself, but never with children.  I, being the children’s ministry director, have, of course, wondered how children would respond to this type of prayer.  God speaks to children so simply and they hear Him so clearly.  I’ve always been so impressed and excited by the way the kids at the Garden hear from Jesus.

About two weeks ago I thought I’d do an “experiment” to see how the kids would respond to something like this.  There were about 10 ten-year-olds in the class on Sunday morning.  We did a lesson on praising God during the good times of our lives and the bad times…no matter what’s going on He’s always there.  I thought this would be a good time.

I said, “Everyone think of your greatest fear…not sharks or snakes…are you afraid of talking in front of people?  Insecure about the way that you look?  Think people don’t like you?”  They all nodded their head that they had something in mind.

“Now close your eyes and picture yourself doing something that brings up this fear.”

They did.

“Now invite Jesus to come into the picture.”

…waited a few seconds…

“Now ask Jesus what He thinks of you.”

…allowed them to spend some time with Jesus.

I closed in prayer, thanked Jesus for what He had done and split the group into gender so we could share and pray together.  I took the girls to the other side of the room and let the boys have their privacy.  I asked if anyone wanted to share what their experience had been.

“I have a fear of talking out loud in front of a lot of people,” one girl said, “so I closed my eyes and I was on a huge stage and there were 1000 people sitting in the audience, staring at me.  Then, when I asked Jesus to show me where He was, He came up from behind me and stood next to me.  He said ‘Don’t be afraid.  What you have to say matters.’

As she was talking I realized I’d NEVER heard her speak up in a discussion or pray out loud so I was so excited that she had heard from Him!  A couple others shared, we prayed together in pairs and then joined the boys again to close in prayer.  A few of them had prayer requests and wanted to pray so I just opened it up and allowed space for whoever wanted to pray.  We went around the circle, everyone saying their prayers.  Then, in a space of silence, I heard a little voice.  It was so quiet that I couldn’t even make out the words, but it was her.  She was praying, out loud, for what seemed like at least a minute.  It was like music to my ears.  I’m getting the chills just writing it right now.  Not every child had that experience, or any special experience at all.  But I know God delighted SO much in that little girl’s faith.

So, in conclusion, Jesus heals!  And He is so real.  It’s a great reminder to pray for that faith like a child’s.

This is Halloween!

Posted: October 5, 2010 in Community, Fun!

This year for Halloween The Garden church is putting on an event at the 5th Street Community Garden in Long Beach.  Sarah Chillberg, the director of our reach team and I had a conversation a while back about how the kids could get involved in this event.  One of the things we came up with was a competition: designing the invitation that will go out to not only our church but two more in Long Beach and everyone in the surrounding area of the 5th Street garden.

Thursday evenings the kids’ life group meets.  It consists of about 8 kids ages 9-14. (Such a wide age range, I know, but they love eachother so much! It’s great.)  I thought this would be a great activity for our life group to do, so we spent one evening in teams and the kids put all their effort into designing the BEST invitation.  There was an incentive, of course: A date with Sarah Chillberg!  (So bummed I couldn’t compete.)  She offered the first place team a trip to Yogurtland and $10 Powell’s Candy Shop on 2nd Street.

And so it began…3 teams, 1 hour and 30 minutes.

They all finished and the entries were turned into the reach team and the arts team to be voted on.  From what I hear it was a close call.  But there was one winning team.

Nevion and Kiala Sroka and Brianna Francabandera!

Joshua Francabandera and Sam Reitz came close behind for 2nd place and their drawing will be featured as the background of the Halloween announcements(?) I believe.  So keep a look-out for a kit-wearing, bagpipe-playing pumkin.

After some editing the final product came out amazing.  Congratulations, girls!  And I hope you all will be joining us for the festivities.

Special thanks to Sarah Chillberg and the reach team, Erica Sims and the arts team and Jon and Lydia Rosene for including us!

The Invitation

”Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them.  But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.  Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.’” -Mark 10:13-15

In December it will be one year since I took on the responsibility of the children’s ministry at The Garden church in Long Beach.  A lot has transpired over these months…we started with anywhere from 1-5 kids and just this morning we had 25 kids, which is the most we’ve had attend so far.

Last week I held a children’s ministry meeting for existing and new volunteers.  I passed out an “outline” of what the children’s ministry looks like right now and what is expected of the volunteers.  Most of our volunteers consist of girls in their mid to late 20′s, execpt for one older couple.  After going thoroughly going through the outline, the woman said, “I see the kids go up front during worship every week and we all think ‘Oh, how cute those kids are.’ But I never knew what was going on back here.  You’ve really got something going.  I had no idea.”

That is when I realized that nobody knows what God is up to with the kids.  And you better believe that in the back bar and cigar lounge at Cohiba God is up to A LOT.  I’m learning as much from God working through the children as they learn from me.  So this is an invitation into the heart of our children’s ministry and the beginning of sharing with you all the gifts He has given us.  I won’t be the only one writing here.  You’ll be hearing from volunteers, parents and, most importantly, the kids.  I garantee you will be impressed and encouraged and that much more amazed by God and how unlimited His power really is.

Welcome to our world.
